Chiropractic Care and Back Pain

Back pain is a major health problem in today’s society. It is one of the most common complaints of individuals, with 84% of Canadians reporting a case of back pain during their lifetime. Chiropractors are well-trained to assess, diagnose, and treat the various causes of back pain, as well as identifying those with red flags (non-mechanical sources of back pain such as infection) that require appropriate referral.

The goal of chiropractic treatment for back pain patients is to reduce the duration of the symptomatic period, improve functional status, and facilitate early return to work and normal activity. Best evidence supports the use of a multimodal approach for the management of back pain. This type of approach is utilized by the Rideau Heights Active Health Centre and includes the following:

  • Education/reassurance
  • Spinal Manipulative/Mobilization Therapy
  • Soft-tissue/myofascial therapy
  • Therapeutic exercise prescription
  • Physical modalities such as heat, ice, electrotherapy, and ultrasound

In summary, patients with back pain have demonstrated higher levels of satisfaction with chiropractic care compared to other approaches.
